Barcelona - new painting
This is the new Barcelona painting in the European cities series. It was quite a challenge because the city has so many symbols, buildings and landmarks. It is 60cm x 60cm and painted in acrylics on canvas. Below you will find the description.
Description of the painting:
The central building of the painting the famous Sagrada Familia. As the landmark of Barcelona it takes the prime location. To the left are the Venetian towers that were originally built for the World Expo. To the right is the skyscraper Torre Agbar which has become a symbol of modern Barcelona. Next to the skyscraper is the icon of the Olympic stadium while the cathedral of Barcelona rests on the peak of the Torre Agbar.
On the bottom left are some buildings from the famous Guelle Park designed by Gaudi. The lizard has become synonymous with the art of Gaudi. It is displayed in the park.
The center bottom displays the Arc de Triomf and the Columbus statue.
Underneath is the Caganer. This is a Barcelona tradition from the 17th century. A statue of a little guy doing his business was placed into nativity scenes, just like Mary and Joseph. Today almost every nativity scene in Barcelona contains a Caganer, and he has become a symbol for Barcelona.
On the bottom right is the Casa Bátlo, a building designed by Gaudi. It is one of the most visited sites in Barcelona today. On the roof of the building is a giant puppet. This is another Barcelona tradition: The Nose Man. He has a nose for every day of the year and for each wish he fulfills he loses a nose. But since he only comes once a year on New Year's Eve, he has used up all his noses and only has one left.
On the towers of the Sagrada Familia are the giants and puppets from the "March of the Giants," a tradition where giant puppets are being taken out on the street in a parade.
In the center on the top of the Sagrada Familia are the Castellas, the human towers where one person climbs on top of the other to form a pyramid. It is a tradition from the 18th century and has become a festival that takes place once a year.
